Can You Play Wii Games On Switch?

When Nintendo hinted at a new release after the disastrous Wii U console, it was still unclear what the latest product had to offer. Then, finally, the handheld console, the Switch, was revealed and went on to become increasingly popular, but there was a drawback. Due to its new features, this fan-favorite gadget was not equipped to play Wii games.

Still, the situation is not a black and white one. There are some alternatives available if you want to play Wii games on the Switch. And if you have gotten to this point in the article, you are probably wondering what these options are. Read on to find out.

CAN YOU PLAY WII GAMES ON SWITCH?

No, you can’t play Wii games on Switch through the usual methods. This is because the Switch was manufactured without backward compatibility and a disc drive. These features will need to be present if you want to play your old Wii games on the device.

While Nintendo did not include these features in the Switch, they made the device using cartridges equipped with flash-based technology, eliminating the need for other bulky physical parts. This, in turn, made the Switch a portable device, unlike its predecessors. However, even with the new design, all hope is not lost, as you can still play some Wii games on the Switch.

HOW TO PLAY WII GAMES ON SWITCH HOMEBREW

To play Wii games on Switch homebrew, you have to be aware of the risks involved with making that decision.

• Homebrewing your Switch might lead to it being banned. This ban would make you unable to play games with your friends online or access the e-shop.

• It would void your warranty because of the violation of Nintendo’s terms and conditions.

• This process would also make your Switch susceptible to viruses and hackers, and there’s no guarantee that it will work.

After carrying out the jailbreaking of your Switch and it succeeds, you can install several retro, unofficial apps and games, including Wii and Wii U games. NB: Jailbreaking means installing the homebrew application on your Switch, giving you access to a vast selection of games.

However, if you are still willing to go ahead despite the risks involved, then follow these steps.

What’s needed

• A laptop

• MicroSD card

• A Nintendo Switch. To be safe, you can get an inexpensive homebrew switch instead of using your regular one. Additionally, make sure the switch software is 3.0.0. so that it will be able to install the Homebrew Launcher.

Steps to follow

• Go to GitHub and download the latest version of nx-hbmenu.

• Copy the downloaded file and paste it into your SD card root menu.

• After that, remove your SD card from your laptop and insert it into your Switch.

• Check your connection settings and start the process of manually configuring your DNS server.

• A prompt will appear; enter this DNS: 104.236.106.125 and conduct a connection test.

• Tap on ‘Install’ and then restart your Switch.

• Perform a connection test again.

• Click on ‘Run.’

After this, if your screen shows ‘2000-1337’, then the installation was successful. Your homebrew applications and games can now be accessed from the Album icon on the home menu.

But if you are not comfortable using this method due to the risk that it comes with, you can simply stick with playing the Wii games that have been made available on the Switch. In addition, there have been some remastered Wii games that you can get legally, and we stated some of them further on in this article.

HOW DOES BREATH OF THE WILD RUN ON WII U?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild runs on Wii U with the following specifications:.

• On TV, the resolution of the game is 720p.

• When it's handheld, the resolution is 420p.

• It has a target frame rate of 30 fps, which is the same value as that of the Switch. However, even though the specs are adequate, the Wii U version of Breath of the Wind does not have special or master editions of BOTW.

The game received a boost on the Switch and ran on it with the following improvements:

• The resolution of the game on TV is 900p.

• On handheld, it is 720p. This makes the images and graphics more realistic.

• It has special and master editions.

• The sounds of water, grass, and other environmental sounds are upgraded.

• The Switch is a portable console, so you can play Breath of the Wind on the go.

HOW TO TRANSFER WII GAMES TO WII U

To transfer your Wii games to Wii U, you have to get some things in place before starting the process. Listed below are all of them:

• A working Network ID from Nintendo on the target Wii U console.

• An SD or SDHC card with a minimum of 512 GB of storage space.

• A strong internet connection

• Your Wii and Wii U consoles. Ensure they have the latest system updates.

• Both consoles must have the same country and region settings.

STEPS TO CARRY OUT THIS PROCESS

• On your Wii, select the Wii channels category and click on the shop channel.

• From there, download the Wii U system transfer tool.

• Repeat this same step on your Wii U device and download the tool. This is done by clicking on the icon present in the Wii mode menu. It’ll redirect you to the Wii Shop channel.

• Insert your SD card and launch the system transfer tool on your Wii U. Follow the on-screen instructions.

• After that, remove your SD card, but do not turn off your Wii U.

• Put the SD card into your Wii. Then, open the transfer tool, follow the instructions, and wait for the data to be transferred while you watch a Pikmin animation.

• Remove the SD card once the transfer is complete.

• Go back and insert your SD card into your Wii U.

• Choose transfer and follow through with the instructions on the screen.

• Be patient while the Pikmin moves your data into your Wii U.

• The data will be wiped off the card and moved to the Wii U instead.

There are some things to note:

1. Do not use an SD card with something previously on it because all the data will be deleted.

2. Software that does not have backward compatibility with Wii U, e.g., GameCube data or controllers, will not be copied.

3. The combined shop channel points for both consoles should not exceed 10,000. If it is more than that, the transfer will not occur.

4. When the system transfer is done, it cannot be reversed.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF THE WII IS GAMECUBE COMPATIBLE

Wii consoles that were bought in 2011 or after might not be GameCube compatible. However, you will know for sure by checking the console’s model number. This is how it works:

• The model number is always close to the barcode on the console’s packaging. It is also present at the bottom of the console itself.

• When you check the number and it starts with RVL, then the Wii is compatible with GameCube accessories and software, but it is not compatible when the model number starts with RVK.

WHAT ARE THE BEST EMULATORS TO USE FOR SWITCH?

Using an emulator for Switch would enable you to play Switch games on other devices. And the great part is that emulators are considered legal.

However, if you use them to download illegal games or share copyrighted ROMs, then it will be tagged as a crime and a breach of Nintendo T’s and C’s. Below are some Switch emulators that would make for an enjoyable gaming experience.

Yuzu: It is known as Nintendo’s first switch emulator. To add to its credibility, it was developed by the same people who developed Citra, one of the best emulators for 3DS games. In addition, Yuzu is also done in a programming language called C++, which supports high-performance apps.

There is a list of games compatible with this emulator and some titles that don’t fare well on it. The aim is to go for games that would run on the emulator without major hitches. Some of them are Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Odyssey, and Legend of Zelda: BOTW. To download the emulator for use, click here.

• Cemu: This emulator has an advantage because it can run both Wii U and Switch games. It is also frequently updated, so you would be able to access modern games here. Additionally, Cemu offers other advanced features that make it easy for you to modify games in settings. The options available include graphic packs where you can switch up mods, resolution, and rendering quality, among other things. What’s more, the games in this emulator can be played at 60 fps. You can download it here.

• Rjuyinx: This emulator is compatible with Linux, Windows, and OSX. It is open-source and written in the C# programming language, giving it precise emulation and an above-average gaming experience. The emulator also has a lot of Switch games available for play.

Furthermore, on their website, they indicated which of their games are still being worked on and which ones contain bugs and glitches. This should serve as a guide when you want to download the games on their site. To download the emulator, use this link.

Games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is 7 GB, and I am Setsuna (1.40 GB) can be downloaded with some ease.
